As parents, we're used to signing permission slips for a range of activities. But if a new bill passes on Beacon Hill, we will also sign permission slips for sex education.
Kids would not be required to take it if parents don't "opt in" and sex ed would be offered only on an elective basis. Right now, parents write notes if they want their kids to "opt out" of sex ed.
Would requiring parents to sign permission slips for sex ed get parents more involved? Would it lead to better communication between parents and kids about what is -eh- a delicate subject? Are kids whose parents don't sign the permission slip in danger of missing out on lessons about pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other diseases?
