10 Ways Design Can Fight Climate Change

claudia-luz.jpg

A British design firm has released a design manifesto (PDF) for sustainable design. It’s a bit too much of a brochure for my taste, but it’s worth thinking about, so here`s a summary:

1. Re-think
2. Re-use
3. Use eco-friendly materials
4. Save energy
5. Share new ideas
6. Design to last
7. Stay local, buying ethical
8. Support what we believe
9. Inspire, have fun
10. Save money

Perhaps the most important note about this manifesto, is the knowledge that there is something that they can do with every project, every client, every day, to lighten their footprint and help fight global warming. And that’s a lesson we can all take something from.

Also check out the Ten Commandments of Sustainable Design.

right time to mention Luz: Girl of the Knowing - a new webcomic from Claudia Dávila. Luz is an environmentally-conscious comic about a girl who is on a mission to gather “the knowing”: knowledge and experience about sustainable survival for humans

Could Virtual reality help Aspergers Patients?

At the UT Dallas Center for Brain Health some patients with Asperger's syndrome are using virtual worlds to help acclimate them to the real world. Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, is described by symptoms like a lack of demonstrated empathy, which causes some difficulties in social interaction
but one common treatment is simply to provide a controlled space to practice interactions. The researches at UT Dallas argue that a virtual world filled with shops and businesses offers the ultimate control. "Unlike other models of intervention, virtual world experiences provide a powerful way to learn new and more appropriate ways to respond to people in scenarios similar to those faced everyday
the brain can rewire its pathways with intensive practice grounded in experience – not by learning rules of how to interact – which has been the most common therapy practice
interactive therapy to deal with problems they encounter everyday but in a safe setting to practice their social skills

Guess what else it says on our money?

So far it's only on the new money, but I like that it's there.
