State Shuts Out Hyatt Hotel

Gov. Deval Patrick has instructed state employees to stop doing business with Hyatt hotels until it rehires 100 housekeepers it fired last month.
Hyatt Hotel Corp., citing declining revenues, laid off the Boston-area housekeepers, some who had been there for decades, and replaced them with workers from Hospitality Staffing Solutions, a Marietta Georgia company whose employees work at roughly half the wages and without benefits
"You must understand that what has been imposed on these workers -- most of whom have worked hard, played by the rules and invested their time and energy in your company's success -- is both upsetting in its own right, and also the worst nightmare of every worker in today's week economy," said Patrick.
The governor has ordered all state employees not to use Hyatt Hotels while traveling, or for any other purpose. "This is not how like to operate. But the treatment of these workers appears to be so substandard that it leaves me no choice."
